ORUK – Orthopaedic Research UK

Fractional Head of Digital Transformation for a national orthopaedic research charity - strategy, systems, learning platform and automation from the inside.

Not every organisation needs an agency on a project contract. Sometimes what’s needed is someone who comes inside, understands the culture and constraints, and works as a genuine part of the team.

For Orthopaedic Research UK – a national charity funding research, education and innovation in bone, joint and muscle health – we took on a fractional Head of Digital Transformation role. We inherited an existing website, assessed what was working and what wasn’t, and made meaningful improvements without unnecessary disruption to an organisation running a busy programme of events, research grants and professional training.

A significant part of that work was the implementation of LearnDash, integrating a fully functional learning management system into the site to support ORUK’s growing education offer. With CPD programmes accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and over 17,000 healthcare professionals trained, having a robust, scalable platform for online learning wasn’t optional – it was essential.

Alongside the site and LMS work, we identified and built automation workflows that reduced manual overhead for a small but high-performing team managing significant partnerships and accreditations. Strategic thinking, practical delivery, no unnecessary overhead.

The result is an organisation with a stronger digital foundation, a proper infrastructure for online learning, and cleaner internal processes – and a model we’d recommend to any charity that needs senior digital leadership without the cost of a full-time hire.
